Situated in one of the most surprising places on the Island of Madeira, the statue of Christ the King of Garajau is one of the most emblematic monuments on the east coast. It is a must-see, which wins visitors over with its unique landscape setting.
The statue of Christ the King of Garajau was erected in honour of the Sagrado Coração de Jesus. It can be found at the viewpoint overlooking Ponta do Garajau, in the municipality of Santa Cruz. The monument was financed and built by Aires de Ornelas, son of the last majorat of Caniço. Its inauguration took place on the 30 October 1927. On that date, the road that connects the town of Cancela to the Monument was also opened to traffic.
The statue of Christ the King of Garajau was designed by the French sculptor Georges Serraz. It is a very imposing sculpture of Jesus Christ with his arms open and facing the Atlantic Ocean, whose immensity leaves an unavoidable mark on the scenery. This space is part of the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve. It thus allows you to contemplate the exuberant biodiversity of this protected area, as well as its clear waters. The Christ the King viewpoint also allows you to see part of Funchal bay.
